With more than 65 miles of shore line and acreage of more than 2,000 Balsam Lake is the largest in Polk County. The lake is well-known for its variety of great recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, sailboating, canoeing and water-skiing. Anglers will enjoy fishing Balsam Lake, with opportunities for large mouth bass, northern pike, panfish and walleye. In the winter months, residents enjoy cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The Balsam Lake community includes plenty of amenities, too, with stores, parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities. Education Both the town and village of Balsam Lake is served by the Unity School District, which provides education for children from pre-school through to high school. Opportunities for higher education located nearby are plentiful, with several technical colleges within 45 miles of the town. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is just 40 miles away, while the Twin Cities of Minnesota provide further access to colleges and universities, and residents of Balsam Lake and Polk County in general have a unique opportunity in being able to attend out-of-state schools that are located close to home.
